Is vigilatism always wrong? ?

Pretty straightforward. I often find myself thinking how i would love to just destroy those people we hear about that are serial murderers, rapists, etc. Whats your opinion. I give this example.....a fathers daughter and wife are murdered and he knows who did it, is he at fault if he hunts that person down
