Why do some Christians claim that the Jews are still God's chosen people?

I do not understand why Christians refer to the Jews as the "chosen people" They broke the covenant (according to both doctrines) and they rejected Christ (the Christian doctrine). How can any Christian claim that the Jews are the chosen people? Doesn't that statement effectively put you beneath them (theologically)?
